Around 1.5 million Scots with a salary over £28,850 are on course to pay more in income tax from April than if they lived in England as the Scottish National Party tax bombshell lands across Scotland.
Rishi Sunak has said the Scottish Budget was “very concerning” and said the SNP had “made Scotland a high tax capital of the UK.” Scotland is to have six income tax bands in 2024/25 compared to three in England. A 42p rate kicks in at earnings over £43,665 while in England it is a 40p rate starting at £50,271.
The SNP introduced a 45p rate for those earning more than £75,000 and pushed up the rate for earnings above £125,140 by a penny to 48p. In England the top tax rate of 45p kicks in at £125,140. Nearly 300 Scottish civil servants have been living south of the Scottish border so they can pay lower income tax, according to an Freedom of Information request obtained by the Scottish Tories.
Guy Renner-Thompson says this represents a golden opportunity for North East England that he wants to seize on if elected the regions first Mayor in the 2nd of May. He said, "I will target investment from Scottish Businesses, many of whom are actively looking to relocate to the North East to escape the SNP Government and their regressive tax regime. My North East will promote a program to welcome Scottish professionals to the region.
Oil, gas and offshore renewable energy companies are strong sectors off the east coast of Scotland I will target to bring to the North East"
